SHADOW UNDER THE LAMP

Our cultures are well known
And praised all along,
Like a lamp amongst the darkness
Like a nightingale's song
But like the shadows we find
Just below the flame
So we have some dark spots
On our shining fame.
Dogmatic, yet so proud we are
Of the prejudices, we live with
Have really never questioned or
Tried to clean the old twigs
The dark clouds of superstition
Still rain on the jolly lands
And wet the dreams and bonds
Pulling down in quicksand
Borders we do create
With logic that doesn't suffice
Yet we are so satisfied
And feel we done something nice
To divide men, on religions
On beliefs and on castes
Following things that do harm us
From huge spendings to fasts
Yet we are so happy to do
That we don't ask a why?
This is good, as we are told
To follow until we die
Well, I am not so wise as you
But I have questions to make
I hope that your learned self
Can correct me if I make mistakes
What makes you different
From me may I know?
Proud of your complexion
All is it so?
Proud of your caste, because it is high
Not by the actions though, but proclaimed from the sky.
Do we bleed different
Don't you bleed red?
Don't we fill our stomachs
With the same bread?
Don't we sweat in summer?
And shiver in the cold?
Don't we turn feeble?
As we turn old?
Doesn't happiness touch us?
And sadness shoots tears?
And peace brings relief
As darkness brings fear?
So what makes you a Brahmin,
A Kshatriya or Vaishya?
Or downcast you look upon
On the hardworking Shudra?
Do all Muslims bear a bomb?
And take the copyright
To get blamed if there is
Any trifle in-site?
The world is accepting
Yet why are you so dumb?
You can't still take intercaste
As a pious promising one?
Will God mind if two lovers
Are happy together?
Exchange their smiles and tears
Furled in the same feather?
So please stop this shame game
All lynches and honour stuff
Decide from both ends, don't focus on your half.
Let cultures be adjusted
And windows of mind open free
As change is only permanent
Everything else, just temporary.
So, let's join hands and rub shoulders
With losers and the champs
And help to enlighten
The shadow under the lamp.
